History & Mission

The Harmony-Zelienople Community Band started in 1999 as an adult evening education class at Seneca Valley Schools. There were 22 banders that first year. The band was founded to encourage musically inactive adults to resume playing their instruments in a friendly atmosphere. Since that humble beginning the band has grown to 104 members. It has outgrown the stages at two schools, and now invites children of banders to join so that families can make music together. Band members come from all walks of life and range in age from 11 to 70+.

The band meets weekly for 10 weeks beginning in January and ends the season with a concert in April. This short-term commitment makes joining the band possible for many who could not fit a year-round activity into their busy schedules.

In 2005 the band performed the National Anthem at PNC Park and in 2006 represented the community bands of the North Hills at the Community Band Festival at Upper St. Clair High School. In 2007 the band returned to PNC Park.

You can see what the band has played over the years - here are our past concert programs.

Interested in Joining Us?

Are you interested in joining the band? If so, contact the director. The band is currently at the maximum our stage and rehearsal halls can handle, so we aren't adding additional chairs. But membership changes a bit each year due to the commitments that individual members might have. So, let the director know of your interest (name, email contact info, instrument, etc) and you'll be added to our list of interested folks. Thanks for your interest; we hope to meet you sometime.
